SAN ANTONIO, TX (January 17, 2023) – Dr. Peter Photos, Chief Technical Officer with Streamline Innovations, Inc. (“Streamline”) is scheduled to deliver his presentation “The Valkyrie Process and Renewable Fuels: Moving into Greener Pastures” at the 73rd edition of the Laurance Reid Gas Conditioning Conference being held on February 20-23, 2023. The conference venue is the NCED Conference Center and Hotel in Norman, Oklahoma.

Streamline’s proven biodegradable chemistry and processes for gas treating convert toxic H2S into OMRI Certified elemental sulfur and water, which can be cleanly disposed of or used in agriculture as fertilizer. Many alternative gas treating solutions result in hazardous or toxic byproducts that require special handling.  In addition, Streamline’s chemistry is regenerative, leaving a small environmental footprint and consuming much less raw materials than scavengers and adsorbent media, while handling changes in flow and concentration better than biological solutions.

The technical paper, co-authored by Peter Photos Ph.D. and John Bourdon P.E., “The Valkyrie Process and Renewable Fuels: Moving into Greener Pastures” covers the urgent need for cost-effective methods for hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas treating using Renewable Gas Sweetening in both geologic and bios-sourced gas production. Traditional methods for H2S gas treating leave producers with an unenviable choice of using either high capital cost Claus-based Sulfur Recovery Units or high operating cost scavengers. Streamline’s VALKYRIE® Renewable Gas Sweetening gas treating solution, however, uses ‘Next-Generation’ Liquid Redox technology, solving many of the issues of conventional Liquid Redox, while providing a scalable, efficient, and economic solutions down to less than 250 pounds per day of equivalent sulfur production.

The Laurance Reid Gas Conditioning Conference (LRGCC) has been presented by the University of Oklahoma since 1951. The LRGCC describes itself as the principal forum for new ideas, developments, and operations for preparing and purifying natural gases and other fuels for market. The LRGCC is a crucial oil and gas conference for all professionals involved in the gas processing, gas conditioning, and gas sweetening industries. The materials presented provide information on technological advances, case studies, theoretical breakthroughs, and current research in the field.

In our blog article Gas Sweetening | Sour Gas Treatment Strategies by Volume, we covered how natural gas, biogas, and water that contain sulfur compounds is considered “sour.” In low concentrations, these contaminants can cause maleficent odors, and in higher concentrations they can create serious hazards to both infrastructure and human health.

When methane gas is contaminated with hydrogen sulfide (H2S) or other sulfur compounds it is sour, whether it is produced from an oil and gas well or generated in an anaerobic digester as part of a Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) project. Considering methane gas, whether produced from a well producing from an underground oil and gas reservoir or generated on the surface in an anaerobic digester or landfill, being sour usually refers to the presence of hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Whether in the context of natural gas or biogas, gas sweetening is synonymous with hydrogen sulfide removal, also known as desulfurization.

The comparison guide below summarizes the major differences between gas sweetening methods, including their pros and cons.

MethodOperational FactorsEnvironmental Factors
Liquid Redox• Chemistry is reused, resulting in lower total cost
• No hazardous disposal requirements
Green technology with harmless byproducts, including elemental sulfur, which can be put to beneficial use
Scavengers and Adsorbents
• Frequent media changes

• Personnel can be exposed to chemicals and potential spontaneous combustion

• Can generate negative downstream effects
• H2S is not permanently destroyed, could eventually come out

• In most cases, must be disposed of in hazardous waste facility
Claus Process
• Established, proven process

• Requires large and expensive facilities staffed by skilled personnel

• Process efficiency does not reach 100% without recycling and tail gas treating

Desulfurizing creates crystalized elemental sulfur, which the main source for industrial applications
Biologics• Sensitive to process changes and upsets, not good for intermittent production scenarios

• Chemistry is high-alkalinity which must be diluted with water for HS&E concerns

• Requires larger footprint than other methods
• Biological regeneration is a green process
Flaring/Combusting• Routine flaring wastes a valuable natural resource that could otherwise be sold

• Reduced asset values

• Negative impact on community relations
• Flaring sour gas produces sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions, a cause of acid rain

• Makes it more difficult to achieve environmental performance goals (e.g., achieving net zero)

As the next generation Redox process, Streamline’s VALKYRIE® H2S treating units use our patented TALON® chemistry, to provide a green solution for gas sweetening without the negatives associated with other gas treating alternatives.

VALKYRIE® units have the widest operating envelope of any treating technology relating to pressure, gas volume and H2S concentration with the lowest total lifecycle cost per pound of sulfur removed compared to all other competitors.  The VALKYRIE unit provides numerous tangible ancillary benefits.

Natural gas, biogas, and water that contain sulfur compounds or ammonia are considered “sour.” In low concentrations, these contaminants can be the source of maleficent odors, while in higher concentrations they can present hazards to infrastructure from corrosion and human health from respiratory illnesses and in some cases death. Treating sourness in fluids is called gas sweetening, because it makes it “less sour” by removing the sulfur and ammonia contaminants.

When it comes to methane gas, whether it is produced from a well drilled deep into the earth or generated on the surface in an anaerobic digester, being sour usually refers to the presence of hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Whether in the context of natural gas or biogas, gas sweetening is synonymous with hydrogen sulfide removal, also known as desulfurization.

There are several strategies for gas sweetening based on several factors, including:

  • The volume of gas to be treated
  • The concentration of H2S in the gas stream
  • How the gas is being used
  • What applicable environmental regulations will allow.

One traditional method for using or disposing of sour gas is to burn it either as a fuel source for a generator or steam boiler or flared it off as a waste product. Burning sour gas eliminates the H2S, however, the reaction also creates sulfur dioxide, which is considered a harmful pollutant and a major contributor to acid rain.

Gas sweetening decontaminates gas streams so they can be commercialized or disposed of in a way that does not generate harmful byproducts, like SO2

There are three main groupings of gas sweetening methods:

  1. Scavengers and Adsorbents
  2. Catalytic reactions
  3. Mechanical destruction or Injection

Scavengers and Adsorbents. Scavengers and adsorbents are typically one-and-done solutions. When using a scavenger, a chemical reaction between the scavenger element and H2S “traps” the hydrogen sulfide, but it does remove it and the spent scavenger media must be disposed of as a hazardous waste.  In the case of adsorbents, the H2S is chemically bonded to the surface of the media, leaving solid wastes for disposal.

Amine scrubbers. For high volumes of gas, sweetening means using an amine scrubber or other selective gas stripping process to concentrate the H2S, after which the resulting “acid gas” stream can then be combusted (thermal oxidation), injected into a specially permitted Acid Gas Injection well (AGI), or destroyed mechanically, chemically, or biologically.

Claus process. For very large volumes of gas and high H2S concentrations, such as at a gas plant or a refinery, the Claus process is employed to mechanically destroy H2S.  The Claus process is a large-scale method that is not suitable for projects that are small, short term, or have high variability in volume.

Biologics. Biological sweetening consists of stripping the H2S out of the gas with an aqueous soda solution and then exposing the H2S -rich solution to thiobacillus bacteria which consume the H2S, leaving elemental sulfur.  This process can be slow to adapt to changes in gas volumes or H2S concentrations.

Acid Gas Injection. AGI or Acid Gas Injection involves injected concentrated H2S gas mixed with CO2 (Acid Gas) into a formation deep in the earth.  While this can be a safe and permanent solution, it is expensive to get started and requires ongoing monitoring, as well as the transportation of the acid gas to the injection site.

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS (March 29, 2022)

Streamline Innovations Inc. (Streamline) is proud to have recently deployed two new VALKYRIE® 1.0 LTPD Skid Units in Lea County New Mexico for Franklin Mountain Energy.

Standard VALKYRIE™ 1.0 LTPD Skid Unit for treating hydrogen sulfide (H2S) at a multi-well pad in the Delaware Basin in New Mexico.

Franklin Mountain Energy is now using four Streamline VALKYRIE units with five additional units on order.  Onsite gas sweetening with the VALKYRIE allows Franklin Mountain Energy to avoid operational issues and extra cost for sweet gas buy-back, allowing them to use their own gas for gas lift.

Streamline has been an instrumental partner in unlocking our resource value in a sour field. Since commissioning our first VALKYRIE unit in August 2021, we have brought online an additional three units.  The VALKYRIE technology is working effectively and is providing a safe and reliable solution for H2S removal from our gas stream.”

-Travis Hutchinson, Director of Facilities at Franklin Mountain Energy

Processing capacity in the area has been limited by the substantial time and capital expenditures needed for the midstream companies to develop large-scale H2S treating or Acid-Gas Injection wells and extend sour lines to the operators.  Historically, acid gas or separated H2S could be flared, but pressure to reduce routine flaring has grown significantly and prevailing commodity prices have made sweetened gas more valuable.  With the VALKYRIE technology, operators have been able to overcome the constraint of limited sour take-away, while realizing more revenue from gas sales, in high performance, economical, environmentally sustainable manner.

VALKYRIE technology is an environmentally friendly way to convert a sour gas waste stream into revenue,” said Randy Rohlfs, Chief Commercial Officer at Streamline Innovations. “Traditional methods for treating hydrogen sulfide are typically expensive and often have negative operational and environmental effects. VALKYRIE units use a green technology that permanently dismantles the H2S molecule into harmless substances, eliminates flaring and allows for use of the sweetened gas for gas lift operations.”

VALKRYIE technology is changing how leading companies manage high H2S, providing a headache-free solution for operators.

Unlike like some hydrogen sulfide treatment processes that create pollution or toxic wastes, Streamline’s Valkyrie destroys H2S, and creates elemental sulfur that can be used for soil amendment in agriculture.

The Bridge to a Green Future

Streamline’s Valkyrie solution employs our proprietary Talon®, a non-toxic, biodegradable Redox (“Reduction-Oxidation”) chemistry process that removes H2S from gas streams by converting it (“reduction”) to elemental sulfur and then regenerating the chemistry by introducing air (“oxidization”), so the chemistry can repeat the treating process, over and over again.  Talon is safe to transport and safe to handle, improving worker safety and quality of life.

Streamline technology gives industries a bridge to a net-zero, sustainable future. We look forward on reporting our progress in our next scorecard.

Valkryie Skid Unit

We are working nonstop to achieve our vision of A Green Future with technology that helps industry transition to a cleaner, more sustainable and profitable future.

Valkyrie technology is eliminating some of the most difficult pollution challenges facing industry, permanently destroying H2S and producing value-added byproducts that can be used in Organic Production.

Simple Elemental Sulfur™

Streamline’s sulfur produced by the Valkyrie is listed as Simple Elemental Sulfur™ with the Organic Material Review Institute (“OMRI”) for use as fertilizer for Organic Production.  OMRI certification approval standards are compliant with the USDA National Organic Program (“NOP”) regulations for organic cultivation processes.  Simple Elemental Sulfur™ is a powdered, amorphous form of sulfur that can be beneficial as a soil amendment, increasing the pH of soil and improving the uptake of nitrogen.
